Road Tax Payment Procedure in Pune (Motor Vehicle/Scooter)

In India, when we buy a vehicle we are paying road tax for that particular State. Hence it is mandatory to pay the road tax of the State that you are moving into, if you are taking your vehicle along.

I moved to Pune a couple of weeks back and since then I have been following Nishit's and Praveen's blog to know the road tax payment procedure.

Note: I was confused on whether it is necessary to re-register the vehicle here or a road tax payment would be fine. With respect to the reply I got from RTO officials, re-registration is not mandatory, if you are not confirm about your stay duration here in Pune.

Office Address (the place where I went):
Regional Transport Officer, Pune
38, Dr. Ambedkar Road, Near Sangam Bridge, Pune 411 001.
Phone no.
+91 20 26058080
+91 20 26058090/8282

NOTE:
  • 2nd and 4th Saturday is not a working day.
  • Reach by 11' o Clock.
  • There are XEROX shops near by, but no internet cafes.
  • This is one time tax, nothing called one year-2 year tax.
Documents Required:
  1. FT form (Refer your Registration paper/ RC card to fill this form)
  2. Pencil Print (keep the form on top of the Chassis number of your bike and scribble) your chassis number on the top front of your FT form.
  3. NCRB certificate (this link doesn't work most of the time, keep checking at different times)
  4. Photocopy/xerox of PUC (Pollution) certificate, better if it is of Pune
  5. Photocopy/xerox of Driving License
  6. Photocopy/xerox of RC (Registration Certificate) book/card/paper
  7. Photocopy/xerox of active/valid vehicle insurance
  8. A hand written application to RTO officer (requesting for road tax payment)
  9. Photocopy/xerox of vehicle purchase invoice (bill)
  10. Photocopy/xerox/original of proof of transfer of vehicle (toll payment receipt/packers & Movers Receipt-This is to show the date of vehicle entry to this state)
  11. Local address proof (not mandatory - Just in case if they ask, they didn't ask me though).
Procedure:
  1. With all the above mentioned documents, go to the RTO officer first right from the entrance) to get 'Accept Tax' signature on the FT form. It was Mr Yogesh Bhag/ Deshmukh when I visited the office, not so sure about the name)
  2. With the signed FT form and all other documents, go the counter No. 32, near to the main entrance. Here the officer at this counter check your all documents and calculate the  tax that needs to be paid. Please staple all your documents together, else he  might ask you to get it done and come back. Also it all depends on his mood, at times he just collect the form and ask you to wait, which happened with me so that he can complete the forms submitted by AGENTS. You can see money kept in between the forms. Don't go anywhere if he asks to wait, wait near the counter. The tax for my Activa (1 yr old) was around 3500/-).
  3. Now go to Counter No. 23 and make your tax payment. It was a lady at this counter when I visited, and she was so helpful and friendly unlike the other officers. Collect your Road Tax paid receipt and enjoy the satisfaction and also the tension free ride.
Hope this was helpful.

    1. Hi, Price of my bike when I bought it in March 2013 was 43599+6321 sales tax. And Karnataka RTO charged 5941 as Road Tax. Here they have charged 3495. I don't know whether they have considered any depreciation value on my bike. The RTO website says it's 7%. You can have a calculation using my bike tax as an example.

  5. Hi Vlife,
Have few queries. Really appreciate if you could share your two cents.
I have brought my Activa from Karnataka to Pune. Asked few friends and was told to pay the road tax and need not re-register or get an NOC and other things...
1)Is it essential to have original invoice or a quotation from Honda showroom in Pune would do??
2)NCRB certificate - Is this required in case there is no transfer of ownership and me being the owner and the user
3)Packers and Movers receipt - Don't have this as I submitted the receipt to claim re-imbursement to my employer.

    1. Hi,

      1. I am not sure on whether original invoice is mandatory or not. They need the invoice in order to calculate the depreciation cost A new quotation on your bike should also work. But make sure of this through inquiry.
      2. For paying tax NCRB is not required if there was no ownership transfer.
      3. Packers and Movers receipt is not mandatory. They need to know when the bike arrived in Pune. Your job offer letter/college admission card...anything to prove your date of arrival can be shown.

  8. Hi,

You have shared really a very good and useful information which I have not able find anywhere from few months.
Can you please tell me, with all my bike documents(which are enough to use my bike in my state), I moved to Mumbai and here I only paid Mumbai road tax(life time tax) for my bike. Is that enough to use my bike here in Mumbai or shall I need to get any other documents from my state/Mumbai?

    1. Thanks. Here when I made the tax payment, the lady who was there in the counter told me that paying road tax is enough. But someone among my friends circle was saying that one need to change his registration if he/she is here to stay for a longer period. There is no source for this information. For changing the registration you need to submit NOC.

I got my activa transferred to pune from up through rail in August 2014. I did not pay tax back then but want to pay it now.
Problem is that I have Rail slip dated 1/08/2014 . Do i have to pay an additional fine for roaming w/o paying fine for 8 months?

    3. But yes! They will charge for the days that you used your bike without paying the tax. But you can try to submit a packers and movers copy and tell them you shifted the bike recently.

  14. Hi,
i just received my activa in pune from Jaipur which was sent by railways
The problem is i don't have NOC and i lost the railway receipt.
How should i proceed with the road tax process?

    1. For paying the tax, NOC is not mandatory. NOC is only required if you want to change the registration.

Coming to railway receipt, you have 2 options:

Option 1 - You can check with the RTO whether proof of transfer is mandatory. If yes, google for any packers and movers near to your place and get a fake receipt. They will provide you for sure at a minimal cost.

Option 2 - If don't want to go to RTO for checking on whether the transfer proof is mandatory, make a fake receipt as I mentioned in Option 1.
